Marshall Vente Band
Tribute to Steely Da
n

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker formed Steely Dan, hailed as "the most tasteful of jazz rock groups," in 1972. Their albums produced many hit recordings that have shaped our lives and changed the landscape of popular music: Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Reelin' In the Years, Do It Again, Peg, Aja, Black Cow, Deacon Blues, Hey Nineteen, Babylon Sisters, Josie, FM … are just some of their memorable classics. When the group broke up in 1981 Rolling Stone touted them as "rock's most intelligent and sophisticated band."

Although Steely Dan has returned, released new recordings, earned another Grammy in 2003 and was inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, the band was actually never a "road band" with annual tours. Additionally, because Fagen and Becker were such studio perfectionists, few have attempted to recreate their sound.

Pianist-composer-arranger Marshall Vente has been a Steely Dan fan for over 30 years! Although known for his numerous recordings, radio show, NEA apprenticeship with Gil Evans and David Matthews, Marshall has always played commercial music with his band: all forms of rock & roll, R & B, Motown, jazz and contemporary music. Apart from this, he has also performed with Spencer Davis, Chuck Berry, the Staple Singers, Natalie Cole, Peter Noon (of Herman's Hermits fame) and others.

In 2005 Marshall was approached to create a 90-minute tribute to Steely Dan that will be presented at Darienfest on September 10, 2006. Many of the Steely Dan hits will be performed! In addition, the MV Band will augment their show with a few other crowd pleasers that feature vocals and horns: Vehicle (Ides of March), September (Earth Wind & Fire), Pink Cadillac (Natalie Cole), Motown hits and others from the working band's extensive repertoire.
